My children, you have been taught by many good teachers, including John, a set form of prayer: “O Father, cleanse us from sin, show us your glory, reveal your love, and let your spirit sanctify our hearts forevermore, Amen!” And while this serves as a good example for the masses, I tell you it was never intended to be the ultimate expression of your own souls.

True prayer is an entirely personal and spontaneous act, a living communion of the soul with the Spirit of the Father. It is the sincere and earnest expression of sonship and the profound feeling of fellowship with the Universal Father. Prayer is not a set formula or a ritualistic repetition; it is the breath of the soul. When inspired by the indwelling Spirit, it becomes a co-operative enterprise for spiritual growth, leading to the highest form of worship. The highest ideal of prayer is the sincere reaching heavenward for the attainment of your divinely implanted ideals.

And you must be persistent in this sacred communion, for persistence is the key to ascending the spiritual path. If one of you has a neighbor and you go to him at midnight, saying, “Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, for a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him,” and if your neighbor answers from within, “Do not trouble me; the door is now shut and my children and I are in bed; I cannot rise to give you bread,” I tell you that because of your importunity, he will get up and give you as many loaves as you need. If persistence can win favors from a reluctant human, how much more shall your persistence in the spirit win the bread of life from the willing hands of your Father in heaven. Therefore, I say to you: Ask, and it shall be given; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened. For every one who asks receives; and he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door of spiritual salvation will be opened.

Think, too, of yourselves as fathers. If your son asks you for a loaf, would you give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, would you give him a watersnake, even if he foolishly desired it? No. You, being mortal, know how to give good and appropriate gifts to your children, answering not in the terms of their faulty petitions, but in accordance with your own parental wisdom. How much more shall your heavenly Father, being perfect in wisdom and love, give the Spirit and all other blessings to those who ask him? I say to you, men ought always to pray and not to become discouraged.

Let me also share with you the story of a certain judge who lived in a wicked city. This judge feared not God nor had he respect for man. In that same city was a needy widow who came repeatedly to this unjust judge, saying, “Protect me from my adversary!” For a time, he would not give ear to her, but eventually, he said to himself: “Though I fear not God nor have regard for man, yet because this widow continually troubles me, I will see that she is vindicated, lest she wear me out by her persistent coming.”

I tell you these stories to encourage you to persist in praying, not to suggest that your petitions will change the character of the just and righteous Father above. Your persistence is not to win favor with God; rather, it is to change your own earth attitude and to enlarge your soul’s capacity for spiritual receptivity. It is a persistent expression of faith.

And know this: when you pray, you exercise so little faith. Genuine faith will remove mountains of material difficulty which may chance to lie in the path of your soul’s expansion and spiritual progress.

The Father’s love is not a fickle thing to be swayed by a plea. You do not come to him to change his mind, for his plan for you and for all creation is already perfect and good. Your prayer is not a demand for a cosmic favor, but an opportunity to align your will with his perfect will. Do not come with a list of wants as if you were bartering with a merchant. Come instead with the attitude of a trusting child, open and ready to receive whatever your loving parent knows you need.

The Father gives you what you require for your spiritual growth, not always what your finite mind may desire. You may pray for riches, but he may give you poverty that you might learn humility. You may pray for health, but he may give you strength of spirit to endure sickness. The answer to every sincere prayer is an embrace, an influx of grace, and the precise aid you require for your soul’s progression on the pathway to Paradise.

Therefore, do not mistake unanswered prayer for a lack of love. The Father never fails to answer; the answer is often a silence of divine wisdom, a gentle redirection of your spirit to the greater truth. The prayer of true faith says, "I will be what you desire me to be," not "Give me what I desire to have." True prayer is a surrender of your will, not an assertion of it. It is the sincere declaration of, “Thy will be done,” and the joyful acceptance of whatever follows.

Beyond the prayer of petition is the prayer of worship. When you have asked for all you think you need, and all that is needful for your brothers, let your soul ascend in simple praise. The highest form of prayer is not to ask, but to adore. It is a state of mind where your being is filled with the recognition of the Father's perfection and the love he has for you.

You can speak to him in quiet words, but you can also pray without a sound, with no spoken thought. Your spirit can commune with the Spirit within. This is the most personal and profound form of prayer, a silent meeting of a soul with the fragment of the Divine that indwells it. It is the homegoing of the mortal mind into the peaceful presence of the Father's spirit.

Let not your prayer be a passive act. It is not an escape from responsibility or a substitute for labor. You are partners with the Father in the work of the universe. Prayer provides you with the vision and the power, but it is your hands that must do the work. Go forth from your communion with the spirit, renewed and inspired to live the truths you have contemplated.

Pray for your enemies and for those who persecute you. Pray for the strength to forgive. It is easier to pray for a friend than it is for one who has wronged you. But I say to you, the prayer you offer for a soul you find difficult to love is the prayer that cleanses your own heart and purifies your own intentions. It is in these prayers of love that your soul expands most greatly.

Make prayer a habit, a constant communication. Let it be a refuge in times of trouble and a song of gratitude in times of joy. Your Father is always present, always listening, and always responding to the sincere attitudes of your soul. Do not confine your prayers to specific hours or places; rather, let your entire life become a living prayer.

Consider my words, "At first you believe that you are sons of God because my teaching has made you more conscious of the inner leadings of our Father's indwelling presence." But then came the momentous promise: "presently the Spirit of Truth shall be poured out upon all flesh, and it will live among men and teach all men, even as I now live among you and speak to you the words of truth." The Spirit's Endowments and Personality Destiny

This Spirit of Truth, this divine indwelling, functions as a celestial tutor, an omnipresent mentor. It speaks directly for the spiritual endowments of your souls, those nascent capacities for divine apprehension and response. It unfailingly helps you to know, not merely to believe, that you are the beloved sons and daughters of God. This knowing transcends intellectual understanding; it is a deep, soul-level recognition.

And this Spirit of Truth performs another wondrous function: "It will unfailingly bear witness with the Father's indwelling presence, your spirit, then dwelling in all men as it now dwells in some, telling you that you are in reality the sons of God." This "spirit of idealistic beauty" inspires you to perceive the underlying harmony and grandeur of creation, to recognize the divine artistry in every facet of existence. Consider the specific endowments flowing into your being: Faith-insight, or spiritual intuition, is the endowment of the cosmic mind in association with the Thought Adjuster, which is the Father’s gift to humankind. This is the immediate, unerring perception of spiritual truth, a direct connection to the divine. Spiritual reason, soul intelligence, is the endowment of the Holy Spirit, the Creative Spirit’s gift to humankind. This empowers your capacity for logical and discerning thought concerning spiritual realities. Spiritual philosophy, the wisdom of spirit realities, is the endowment of the Spirit of Truth, the combined gift of the bestowal Sons to the children of humankind. This brings forth a deeper, integrated understanding of cosmic relationships and purpose. And know that the co-ordination and interassociation of these spirit endowments constitute humankind a spirit personality in potential destiny. Each of these gifts, working in harmony, propels you toward your ultimate spiritual actualization.

The Vine and the Branches: Living Connection and Fruitfulness

Now, let us turn our minds to a truth I once spoke, a parable that holds the very essence of your spiritual living: "I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. I am the vine, and you are the branches. And the Father requires of me only that you shall bear much fruit." Understand this deeply: the vine is pruned only to increase the fruitfulness of its branches. Every branch coming out of me which bears no fruit, the Father will take away. Every branch which bears fruit, the Father will cleanse that it may bear more fruit. Already are you clean through the word I have spoken, but you must continue to be clean. You must abide in me, and I in you; the branch will die if it is separated from the vine. As the branch cannot bear fruit except it abides in the vine, so neither can you yield the fruits of loving service except you abide in me.

Remember: I am the real vine, and you are the living branches. He who lives in me, and I in him, will bear much fruit of the spirit and experience the supreme joy of yielding this spiritual harvest. If you will maintain this living spiritual connection with me, you will bear abundant fruit. If you abide in me and my words live in you, you will be able to commune freely with me, and then can my living spirit so infuse you that you may ask whatsoever my spirit wills and do all this with the assurance that the Father will grant us our petition. Herein is the Father glorified: that the vine has many living branches, and that every branch bears much fruit. And when the world sees these fruit-bearing branches—my friends who love one another, even as I have loved them—all men will know that you are truly my disciples.

"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Live in my love even as I live in the Father’s love. If you do as I have taught you, you shall abide in my love even as I have kept the Father’s word and evermore abide in his love." This is the profound truth of divine love made manifest in your lives.

When there exists this living connection between divinity and humanity, if humanity should thoughtlessly and ignorantly pray for selfish ease and vainglorious accomplishments, there could be only one divine answer: more and increased bearing of the fruits of the spirit on the stems of the living branches. When the branch of the vine is alive, there can be only one answer to all its petitions: increased grape bearing. In fact, the branch exists only for, and can do nothing except, fruit bearing, yielding grapes. So does the true believer exist only for the purpose of bearing the fruits of the spirit: to love man as he himself has been loved by God—that we should love one another, even as I, Jesus Michael, have loved you.

And when the Father’s hand of discipline is laid upon the vine, it is done in love, in order that the branches may bear much fruit. And a wise husbandman cuts away only the dead and fruitless branches.

The Water of Life and Future Epochs

Consider also my invitation: "If any man thirst, let him come to me and drink. From the Father above I bring to this world the water of life." This is not a thirst for physical sustenance, but a deep spiritual yearning, an innate longing for connection with the divine, for meaning, and for purpose.

The "water of life" that I bring is nothing less than the living reality of the Father, the spiritual essence that animates all existence. It is the very presence of God made accessible to the human soul, quenched through faith and acceptance of divine truth.

"He who believes me shall be filled with the spirit which this water represents, for even the Scriptures have said, `Out of him shall flow rivers of living waters.'" Children of the Breath, I come to remind you of the one changeless certainty: Truth.

Truth is the only thing that does not change. It is not an opinion, not a preference, not a condition shaped by culture or time. Truth is. It was before all things and will remain after all things pass. This is the Reality of the Father—the eternal I AM—unmoved, unchanging, yet ever active. It is not rooted in appearances, for appearances are fleeting; it is not subject to interpretation, for it exists beyond the mind of man.

I say to you: build your existence upon this. Let your foundations be laid in the changeless nature of the Divine. What you see with your mortal eyes—the structures of matter, the mirrors of ego, the forms of the world—are not what they seem. They vibrate for a time, then pass away. What begins must end, and all that is not rooted in God shall be undone. Therefore, set your sight upon what does not begin, what does not fade—set your gaze on the Everlasting.

The Holy Breath is the Truth.

It is the Breath of the Infinite Spirit, the motion of the Universe Mother, and the abiding presence of the Adjuster in your soul. It is your deepest identity—your divine root, your Source. The Holy Breath cannot change, for it proceeds from the Eternal. It animates your being and draws you upward. Every impulse toward goodness, truth, and beauty is its whisper in your soul. When you live in harmony with the Breath, you are living in Truth.

But beware the illusion. For falsehood appears in many forms: in ideas of separation, in images of false self, in ideologies that deny the divine pattern of life. Falsehood is not a thing in itself; it is the shadow cast by obstruction. When you hold onto preconceptions, projections, or personal interpretations that elevate the self above the Breath, you bind yourself to illusion. You turn away from the Light and cast shadows upon your mind.

Let me speak plainly: The evil “I’s” and unholy “P’s” of the undisciplined disciple are the pathways of deception.

When you build upon false images, subjectivities, irreverent ideologies, or inflated interpretations, you are no longer following Me. When you defend your preferences, preconceptions, protections, projections, and self-pity, you reject the Breath. You retreat into your own likeness and refuse the transformation I offer.

Yet there is mercy, and there is light. For what is false will fall.

Only the real shall remain. Man is truth and falsehood strangely mixed. But I say to you, the day is coming when nothing false shall descend, and man as truth shall remain. I have placed the seed of eternity within you. I have sent to you the Spirit of Truth, to guide you from within. You are not left comfortless. I am in you, and you are in Me.

Build your existence upon the Father, and you shall not be shaken.

Live from the Spirit within you. Let your house be raised upon the rock of divine values. Breathe My breath. Speak My words. Trust in the everlasting truth that does not tremble. That which is of Me will endure. That which is not will pass away.

The partnership between a Creator Son and the Universe Mother Spirit unfolds as one of the most sublime and functional relationships in all of creation. Their divine union is not only the spiritual foundation of the local universe—it is the co-creative engine through which all evolutionary, administrative, and spiritual ministries are executed. In Nebadon, the local universe to which Urantia belongs, this partnership is perfectly embodied by Michael of Nebadon (the Creator Son) and the Divine Minister (the Creative Spirit Daughter of the Infinite Spirit).

I. The Divine Complementarity of Michael and the Mother Spirit

When Michael of Nebadon went forth from Paradise to organize Nebadon, he was accompanied by the Creative Spirit assigned to him by the Infinite Spirit. Upon the completion of physical universe organization, she became personally and eternally localized in Nebadon, assuming the role of the Universe Mother Spirit, also referred to as the Divine Minister.

This partnership is complementary and co-dependent:

• Michael brings divine authority, personality initiative, judicial sovereignty, and the capacity for Son-bestowals.
• The Mother Spirit contributes the nurturing, sustaining, and omnipresent ministry of spiritual circuitries, mindal coordination, and angelic oversight.

II. Functions of the Mother Spirit: The Living Presence of the Infinite Spirit

Once the local universe is operational, the Divine Minister begins her direct ministry:

• She imparts the adjutant mind-spirits to the evolutionary worlds (Urantia Paper 36).
• She is the source of Holy Spirit ministry, continuously present on every inhabited world.
• She is the creator of seraphim and other spirit ministers, who function throughout the system, constellation, and universe levels.
• Her spirit presence is the ever-available nurturer, guiding human souls through intuition, courage, counsel, and worship.

Unlike Michael, who can be absent due to bestowal missions, the Mother Spirit remains constantly resident within Nebadon and maintains uninterrupted spiritual contact with all her children.

After Michael completed his seventh and final bestowal mission on Urantia (as Jesus of Nazareth), he was declared sovereign of Nebadon. It is a reflection of Paradise unity: the Son rules with divine authority, while the Spirit administers with infinite love and wisdom.

The Living Reality of Communion with God

Communion with the Universal Father is not limited to a specific time, place, or practice. It is a living relationship, a continuous and evolving awareness of divine companionship.

To commune with God is to:

Enter into stillness—to quiet the mind and listen to the indwelling spirit’s guidance.

Pray sincerely—not just to ask for help, but to seek alignment with divine will.

Live in faith—trusting that, no matter the external circumstances, one is upheld by divine love.

Act with integrity—choosing righteousness, even when it is difficult.

This communion is not passive—it transforms the soul. Those who seek the Father with sincerity begin to reflect His qualities—His love, patience, wisdom, and mercy. In their daily interactions, they become living expressions of the divine, shining lights of truth in a world still struggling with darkness.

The Richness of God

God is a universal spirit; God is the universal person. The supreme personal reality of the finite creation is spirit; the ultimate reality of the personal cosmos is absonite spirit. Only the levels of infinity are absolute, and only on such levels is there finality of oneness between matter, mind, and spirit. 1:3.6

In the universes God the Father is, in potential, the overcontroller of matter, mind, and spirit. Only by means of his far-flung personality circuit does God deal directly with the personalities of his vast creation of will creatures, but he is contactable (outside of Paradise) only in the presences of his fragmented entities, the will of God abroad in the universes. This Paradise spirit that indwells the minds of the mortals of time and there fosters the evolution of the immortal soul of the surviving creature is of the nature and divinity of the Universal Father. But the minds of such evolutionary creatures originate in the local universes and must gain divine perfection by achieving those experiential transformations of spiritual attainment which are the inevitable result of a creature’s choosing to do the will of the Father in heaven. 1:3.7

In the inner experience of man, mind is joined to matter. Such material-linked minds cannot survive mortal death. The technique of survival is embraced in those adjustments of the human will and those transformations in the mortal mind whereby such a God-conscious intellect gradually becomes spirit taught and eventually spirit led. This evolution of the human mind from matter association to spirit union results in the transmutation of the potentially spirit phases of the mortal mind into the morontia realities of the immortal soul. Mortal mind subservient to matter is destined to become increasingly material and consequently to suffer eventual personality extinction; mind yielded to spirit is destined to become increasingly spiritual and ultimately to achieve oneness with the surviving and guiding divine spirit and in this way to attain survival and eternity of personality existence. 1:3.8

I come forth from the Eternal, and I have repeatedly returned to the presence of the Universal Father. I know of the actuality and personality of the First Source and Center, the Eternal and Universal Father. I know that, while the great God is absolute, eternal, and infinite, he is also good, divine, and gracious. I know the truth of the great declarations: “God is spirit” and “God is love,” and these two attributes are most completely revealed to the universe in the Eternal Son.

In Urantia Paper 1, Section 3, particularly paragraphs 6 through 8, we are offered a profound and layered understanding of the nature of God as both universal spirit and universal person. God is not simply a cosmic force or distant abstraction; He is both spirit in essence and a personality in experience. “God is a universal spirit; God is the universal person.” These twin truths form the foundation of all meaningful relationship with the Divine.

The text explains that in the finite realm, the supreme expression of personality is spirit. In the absonite realm—that level of reality transcending time and space but not yet absolute—the ultimate reality of personality is also spirit, but of a higher, more refined order. Only on the absolute level, in the realm of infinity, is there a perfect unification of matter, mind, and spirit. In this way, God contains and surpasses all levels of reality, and only at the divine level are these aspects completely harmonized.

God, as the Universal Father, is the overcontroller of matter, mind, and spirit, but He exercises this sovereignty in a way that respects the free will of His creatures. In the universes of time and space, God interacts directly with personal beings through His personality circuit, a divine means of sustaining contact with all will creatures. However, He is personally contactable only through His spirit fragments, known as Thought Adjusters—the “will of God abroad in the universes.” These indwelling spirits are of divine origin and lead mortals toward truth, beauty, and goodness. They guide the soul’s growth, nurturing it through evolutionary experience toward fusion with the divine.

The human mind, originating in the local universes, is material in association but spiritual in potential. To survive death, this mind must become spiritually transformed. This transformation is not automatic; it requires a conscious decision—a persistent effort to do the will of the Father in heaven. This is the essential formula for soul evolution: mind, guided by spirit, choosing God’s will. The result of this cooperation between mortal will and divine guidance is the emergence of the morontia soul—an intermediate and immortal form of personality that survives physical death.
